Our Journey: Clear Creek Reservoir McHood Park, Chevelon Canyon & Babbitt Tank in Winslow, AZ

Our Journey date: 2024-07-18

A few photos I've collected over the years of McHood Park at Clear Creek Reservoir and Chevelon Creek which flows thru Chevelon Canyon.

Clear Creek starts up on the Mogollon Rim and flows to the reservoir about 5 miles SE of Winslow. It then continues to the Little Colorado River. It was dammed in the 1930s and is a hot spot for cliff diving, fishing, swimming, boating, and rock climbing. I'v spent the afternoon here myself working on my tan while floating thru the amazing rock walls and watching the kids cliff dive!

My beloved Buddy!

Chevelon Creek Bridge crosses Chevelon Canyon about 12 miles to the E as the crow flies. It also starts up on the Mogollon Rim and flows to the Little Colorado River. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 for it's rare desig, part of the early transnational roadway, and being in nearly original condition.

I've spent several afternoons out by Chevelon Canyon exploring land and collecting rocks, truckloads! The colors are fascinating and remind me of the rich red colors of the painted desert which you can see to the north! Absolutely fabulous!

Babbit Tank is a man made rock dam that catches the water runoff into a pond area using the natural contour of the canyon. Babbit Tank Canyon is a tributary to Chevelon Canyon. The colors along the sides of this canyon are stunning and my photos do not do any justice!
