5 Acres in Captian, NM

PROPERTY INFORMATION

5 acres of land for sale in Capitan, NM with power & a graveled road only 285 feet away and hidden in the trees! It sits 15-20 minutes NE of Alto and Ruidoso overlooking the Capitan Mountains, home of Smokey Bear! It's just off the Billy the Kid Trail aka Hwy 48. She is defiintely 5 stars and a big of chips and enchanting with an intermittent stream carving it's way off the hill thru the property, yet gentle and flat on her south side - a perfect spot for a garden or to watch the deer eat your garden!

All of the photos were taken in June 2023 of the property and its surrounding views. Take CR48 (Billy the Kid Highway) SW out of Capitan 2 miles. Go E on Coyote Ridge Trail for 8/10 of a mile to a graveled road. This graveled road cuts S thru the adjoining neighbors property to the N. It then runs 2/10 of a mile S/SW into the neighbor that adjoins this property on the west. Right before it stops at their gate there is a cleared path to the left that heads east along the fence line 285 feet to the NW corner of the property.

At some point you pass thru two metal poles (guessing these mark the actual easement distance).

All of this is the dedicated easement to the property as seen in the first map in the map section! Hot dog - all of that easement is already built thru the adjoining property to the north and there's power running along that graveled road as well!!$$!!

The neighbor to the north has a green cabin you can see thru the trees along the north part of the property.

There is a white piece of piping hanging off the neighbors fence that adjoins the property on it's NW corner!

I walked the property from the north to the south. The property slopes up the hill to the south and then levels out a bit before it slopes down to the south to the flat part at the back end of it.

There is a bit of a stream that comes down off the hill and cute thru the property to the north and carves an interesting stream thru it!

Cute little red berries - not sure what they are but sweet to look at!

Who pooped in the woods?!?

There's beautiful views of the Capitan Mountains to the west and north!

Several homes are sprinkled about the Capitan area! Cute!

A peak thru the trees of the mountians to the north!

Almost down to the south end of the property line. The neighbors fence line goes part way down the west side of the property and then there is a break in the fence line before it picks it up again at the bottom. You can also see in this photo the road that runs along the south of the property.

It's is pretty flat on the southern bottom part. It's more open meadows but still lots of tall trees - very pretty!

Views across to the Capitan Mountains!

Another view of the road along the southern border.

There sure are some very colorful rocks strewn about!

Oh there are breathtaking views overlooking the Capitan Mountians, home of Smokey Bear! In 1950, in the Capitan Mountains of New Mexico, a young bear cub found himself caught in a burning forest. He took refuge in a tree and was badly burned but saved by firefighters who named him Smokey. Smokey Bear only became known as Smokey the Bear after a songwriter used it in a song.

The National Zoo in Washington, D.C. became his new home and he became a living symbol in spreading messages of wildfire prevention and forest conservation. Smokey died in 1976 and was returned to Capitan, New Mexico, where he is buried in the State Historical Park.

Over the years I have yelled several times STOP while out exploring the middle of nowhere as I spot a Smokey Bear sign telling what the fire watch is that I want to get my photo with! Imagine the excitement the first time I got my picture taken with the one outside of Capitan!  When I stopped at the visitor's center I announced my life was complete and the gal let me know I wasn't the first to mention that!

Looking west down Coyote Ridge Trail. The road on the left is the road that is the easement to the property that cuts thru the adjoining property to the north as seen in the map seciton.

Coyote Ridge Trail is a marked road.

Alto Lake is about 10 miles SW.  There were people fishing off the shore when we visited!

My boyfriend Buddy took me for a walk down to the lake!

Captian is a small community of about 1,400 citizens. It sits nestled between the Capitan and the Sacramento Mountains. The average rainfall is 15.7 inches. The mean maximum temperature is 68 degrees while the mean minimum is 36 degrees.

It is home of the Smokey Bear Museum. I've been a Smokey Bear fan for years and had no idea ahead of time his remains were in the Lincoln National Forest!

I purchased this a few years back at a foreclosure sale and it took forever to quiet the title as there was an old lien on it! But my oh my was it worth it and she is all ready to go! What a beautiful spot for your dream getaway! Enjoy! Char the Explorer : )

PROPERTY MAPS

Property Maps

Prior to visiting the property I suggest you study the maps and the satellite image as they tell the story on how to get there. Get a mental picture of how to get to a property from a main road. I frequently write notes on how I got to the property.

Print out the important maps like the parcel map, aerial photo with the GPS coords and street map. These are the maps I use myself if I was going to view the property. You can enter the latitude and longitude into Google or Bing maps by putting a comma between them.

I also suggest you bring a street dedicated GPS like a Garmin, not your phone. Do not rely on your GPS to take you the correct way as she'll take you down miles of roads that aren't the main drags. I've named mine Thelma and Louise because she's tried to drive me off a cliff a few times! If I could just get Brad Pitt to sit in the back seat! : )

Most of the properties I sell are down some kind of dirt road - my favs! Be smart and bring a shovel, water, food, blankets, mace, a dog and anything else you might need if you get stuck for a day or two. I've been stuck in the sand, a marsh, had tires blow out - you name it. Be prepared, be safe, and have fun. She's a beautiful Earth. We only get one shot here - get out there and see all she has to offer. Char the Explorer : )

Lincoln County Area Photos

Lincoln County Area Photos of Carrizozo, White Oaks, Capitan, Ruidoso and Alto!

Welcome to Lincoln County, New Mexico, the ultimate playground in the southwest from Sierra Blanca aka the White Mountains at 11,981 feet to the beautiful open valleys of Carrizozo at 5429 feet. Wow was my head spinning the first time I visited here in 2016!

A video of our trip around Lincoln County!

Carrizozo sits in the shadows of the Sacramento Mountain Range at the northern edge of the Tularosa Basin. It's a quiet little town and the county seat about 45 minutes NW of Ruidoso. About 15 minutes NE is the ghost mining town of White Oaks, famous for the No Scum Allowed Saloon. We headed up there our first night to see if they truly had some of the coldest beer in Lincoln County to find them closed! But it's a cute little town and I enjoyed the historical buildings over 100 years old!

Since we didn't find any cold beer we decided to visit the Lincoln County Fair in Capitan! That sure was a fun time and my first pig show I must admit! I took so many photos of it that I made an entire video of just the fair! It was a small friendly fair and I'm sure I stuck out like a sore thumb, especially after my comment about the “sparkly pig”. The gal who was getting ready to go into the arena with her pig looked at me and said no that's just the pig! Wow was that some serious pig driving as I watched two women keep their pig in the judges view as best as possible! Well turns out he was a sparkly pig as they took away the blue ribbon! Hot dog!

I also got several photos of a mean goat giving several good head butts to a baby goat. It's funny now looking at the photos but it wasn't so funny at the moment! I learned that there really is a duck with a pom pom hairdo called a crested duck! I thought someone had somehow done that to them!

The Lincoln Count Fair in Capitan!

Capitan is also home of Smokey Bear. I've been a huge fan of his since I started traveling across the western USA, frequently stopping to take my picture with him when I see his fire danger signs! Oh I was thrilled when I finally got a chance to stop into the museum. As I walked in I declared “my life is now complete” and the gal behind the counter laughed and said I definitely wasn't the first one to come thru those doors and say that! So a quick picture with my hero!

In 1950 a fire destroyed 17,000 of forest and grasslands. A fire crew found the frightened bear cub clinging for life to the side of a burnt pine tree. He was so badly burnt they named him “Smokey Bear”. He was flown to Sante Fe and upon recovery was sent to a zoo in Washington DC. In 1962 NM adopted the Black Bear as the State Animal and sent him a bear companion, Goldie. Upon his death in 1976 he returned to his home in the Capitan Mountains.

The mountain village of Ruidoso is a thriving scene people flock to all four seasons! It's 100 miles to the closest interstate and 2 hours from the nearest commercial airport yet people come here year round for winter skiing at Ski Apache, summer hiking and fishing, golf courses, art galleries, restaurants, and to relax with to the smell of pine trees and streams winding their way thru the forest.

My boyfriend Buddy took me for a walk down to Alto Lake!

It is surrounded by the Lincoln National Forest and there is a network of hiking trails! We spotted deer and elk while driving around town and read that black bear, wild horses and the rare mountain lion also call this home!

It's also home of the Ruidoso Downs Race Track, a tradition since the 1940's. It's famous for the showcase All American Futurity, the world's richest two year old race which was a $3 million purse in 2015! The Labor Day event drew a record of 25,000 fans which is more than live in Lincoln County!

Billy the Kid Scenic Byway visitors center sits next door to the Hubbard Museum of the American West. I didn't get a chance to view the museum but the beautiful monuments of horses outside the museum was well worth the drive by! Billy, born Henry McCarty, was an American Old West gunfighter who joined the Regulators and participated in the Lincoln County War. The Kid allegedly shot and killed two deputies, but was never indicted for the murders.
