A wildfire starting to burn in the distance the day I viewed these properties. I'll admit I was a bit irritated at first that smoke was ruining the beautiful view of the snowcapped mountain peaks. The irritation quickly changed to one of my biggest adventures exploring land yet! I sure have a huge appreciation for the firefighters and neighbors that showed up that day!

PROPERTY INFORMATION

WELCOME TO THE ROARING 20’S!

We have drastically reduced prices on over 60% of our inventory! With tax refund season around the corner, now is the time to make your Great American Dream come true! Discover just how easy owning land is!

It’s been a while since I wrote a newsletter or blog although I post frequently to our Smile4u Land Sales page on Facebook – here's a link to come join in the chaos! Smile4u Land Sales on Facebook

So what’s been going on? This little land company sure has seen a lot of changes in almost 2 decades! I started in 2001 with me being the only employee. At times there’s been up to 9 employees, but to be honest that’s huge volumes of work managing people. The older I get the more freedom I long for. Now it is me and my assistant Sherilyn, (Lynn) and my daughter Amber still does the books.

I started 2020 with my ducks in a row!

Those who have followed us for years know that Amber and Lynn have been dear friends since grade school in Washington State. Amber moved to the big town of Phoenix a year ago and this winter Lynn joined her – literally within walking distance to her best friend! So she is now working remotely and I am delighted to say I am now working from a quiet home once again! There’s no crystal ball that gives the picture of what the future looks like but I sure love this little land company and all of the opportunities it has brought and the ones it still holds!

Lynn and Amber

Buddy will turn 15 in 2020! He has early kidney disease so his diet focuses on low protein. He wears doggie diapers at night and when we travel, although I prefer to call them “shorts” because that sounds a lot cooler! He has hearing loss and got lost 3 times this past year. But he continues to travel with me and “mark’s” many of the properties!

Headed fishing!

I just got back from Isla Mujeras, a little island off Cancun, Mexico. This is the 3rd year I’ve gone – I am blessed! I assisted once again in a shoe giveaway to 800 needy children on the island. This year was super special as my 2 high school girlfriends joined me.

I was in charge of the kids games this year and fishing for ducks and face paiting were sure a hit! Some of these children stood in line for several hours to get a pair.  And of course I whooped it up on the beach and ate some awesome food.  So thank you to my customers who have supported me over the years – you make it possible!

Fishing for ducks was definitely the hit of the day!

My foster sister Lorna painted a few hundred faces!

I spent this last year thinking about minimalism while I cleaned out a few kitchen and bathroom drawers and closets. The philosophy is about less possessions and excess stuff and living experiences instead. I chuckled when I saw I had 5 pancake turners! Ha! I used the 1, 2, 3 rule – if I had used it this past year keep it – have used it in the past 2 years probably keep it – hadn’t used it for 3 years probably get rid of. Of course really sentimental things I kept, like the chair I rocked Amber in.

In Mexico I unexpectedly found myself in a year end test! There wasn’t any hot water for the first few weeks. When I finally received hot water it was an all or nothing thing – all hot or all cold. I braved it – the price was right – year one down of my minimalism quest!

Headed to the shoe giveaway with my homemade games!

The roaring 20’s got its name from popular culture and ideas that defied the times. I find it interesting that I am once again hearing the term and am excited to see what the next decade brings. Dream Big! Char : )

Your choice of two 20 acre parcels in Mill City, Nevada by Winnemucca and Lovelock close to power and a paved road. Its about 2.5 hours NE of Reno and 4.5 miles south of I-80 by the historical ghost town Unionville. Fishermans favorite Rye Patch State Recreation is 30 miles SW. I watched a wildfire erupt the afternoon I visited this property and watched it burn one of the lots. Wow what an experience and the photos ar worth a thousand words!

All the photos were taken in June 2019 of the property and surrounding views. I took them along the highway by the SE corner of the west lot and the NW corner of the east lot. The parcel map shows how these lots sit across from each other.

They sit about 4.5 miles S of the Mill City exit off Interstate 80. The west lot which burnt sits about 445' W of paved Hwy 400. Power runs about 400 feet W of this lot. The east lot sits about 870' E of Hwy 400.  The map section points out where the road and power runs from the properties. You would need to contact the local power company for the price to bring it to the property.

Looking north on Hwy 400 before it burned on the W side of the highway.

Looking south to Hwy 400 after the fire.

This properties sit in Buena Vista Valley. They are mostly flat with a gentle roll down to the bottom of the valley floor to the east. It is covered in cheat grass and cows graze the area. The cheat grass is what burnt so quickly on the west lot. There are a few neighbors sprinkled about this part of the valley but for the most part its undeveloped with no one around!

From the NE to the SE is a view of the East Range. It reaches 7398 feet at Dun Glen Peak!

From the NW to the SW is a long view of the Humboldt Range which was still snowcapped in June. Her lower foothills were a pretty green! It reaches up to an elevation of 9,836 feet at Star Peak! I noticed the smoke starting to rise in front of the snowcapped mountain.

I was out looking at another property a few miles south of these two lots. On my way to these lots I noticed a neighbor about 1 mile SW that had a fire going. I thought wow it is super hot, low humidity...what were they doing! Turns out I saw the beginning of a wild fire! Wow what an adventure to watch the fire crews show up with bulldozers and water trucks and carve a barrier to contain it while planes dropped repellent! I tried to help put it out before help showed up but was little use other than gathering the dogs and sheltering them in my vehicle. I actually sat on my tailgate with a gal who lived there and watched! It burnt several square miles of land in that short period of time. They did save their home and afterwards I sat inside with them and had a cold soda.

Someone said oh no you're property got burnt, what are you going to do with it. I said I've always had interested buyers for properties that were burnt. They claim it is good soil for growing....hmmmm.

There is quite a bit of agriculture and ranching in this valley and you can see some of the circular irrigated crops in the aerial photos looking south down the valley. I spotted a few cowboys out roping one afternoon at Coyote Ranch in 2004! Wow has it been that many years I've been coming out here?! This year when I drove by the ranch I didn't notice the animals and crops that I normally do, wonder why.

A few miles further south is the historical town of Unionville. I took the scenic drive thru it in May 2013 and boy was it sure a busy little place - all sorts of people driving on a weekend to visit this cute ghost town. In 1870 - 1880 Unionville produced over $3,000,000 in silver.

I took a drive thru Unionville before I drove the property. I have been up here a few times now and it sure is a stunning little historical town. In 1870 - 1880 Unionville produced over $3,000,000 in silver. Mark Twain, best known for The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, is among those who tried their luck prospecting here and one of his cabins remains.

There are a few services along the interstate including the TA Travel Center & Alamo Casino which I have stopped at a few times. A friendly place to get gas and a bite to eat. I've actually walked out a winner the 2 times I've visited the casino!

Also in the area a few miles west of Mill City along I80 is the historical Thunder Mountain Indian Monument now a State of Nevada Preservation Project. It is a place that the hippies used to trek to in the 60s. Created by Chief Rolling Mountain Thunder, aka Frank Van Zant, he described his roadside art park variously as a museum, a monument to the American Indian, and as a retreat for pilgrims aspiring to the "pure and radiant heart." He gathered all the junk people had left behind over the years and made art out of it, making statements about the sad history of the American Indians.

The house is a collaboration of bottles, car parts, TVs, windshields, rocks, horse carts, you name it! You could spend a long time looking at the different things (not sure what to call them, so we'll just keep it at "things!") But definitely a form of art! This is really a piece of American History! His son has spent several years getting it preserved and put on the historic registry. It is an unusual look at the plight of the Native Americans.

There is a donation box there to help support their efforts asking for $2 per group. We dug deep into our wallets and came up with about $5 in change. As I dumped it into the donation box, I thought about those ahead of me who may have come to this place years ago with just pennies in their pockets as well and I got a big smile out of that! I wrote about this place in May 2012 in a newsletter and I have since read about it in a travel magazine. I have also read that this wasn't such a happy place for some people who lived here and I just want to acknowledge that as well. Life is definitely difficult at times and not every ones plight in life turns in to a quirky art museum. As I continue to learn about this place, the art seems to come more to life every time I visit and each time I see something new that I didn't notice before.

30 miles SW is Rye Patch Reservoir, a hot spot to fish and boat! I frequently stop and take a peek at the water level and see if anyone is out fishing or boating! The Humboldt River finds its early beginnings in Elko County and it flows across the state to this reservoir.

I sure had an adventurous day in Buena Vista Valley and as I left out the top of the valley I spotted this handsome big butt and big horns - what a shot! Male horns grow up to 19.7 inches and curl inward at the top while the ladies reach up to 3.9 and are straight. Now ya know! Ha!

Buena Vista means good view and indeed it is a good view! Enjoy! Char the Explorer : )

Property Maps

Prior to visiting the property I suggest you study the maps and the satellite images as they tell the story on how to get there. Get a mental picture of how to get the property from a main road. I frequently write notes in the listings on how I got there myself.

Print out the important maps like the parcel map, the aerial photo with the GPS coordinates and the street map. These are the maps I would use myself if I was going to view the property.

You can enter the latitude and longitude into the search field in Google or Bing maps by putting a comma between them.

I suggest you bring a street dedicated GPS like a Garmin, not your phone. Do not rely on your GPS to take you the correct way as it can take you down miles of roads that aren't the main drags. I've named mine Thelma and Louise because she's tried to drive me off a cliff a few times! If I could just get Brad Pitt to sit in the back seat! : )

Most of the properties I sell are down some kind of rural road - my favs! Be smart and bring a shovel, water, food, blankets, mace, a dog and anything else you might need if you get stuck for a day or two. I've been stuck in the sand, a marsh, had tires blow out - you name it. Be prepared, be safe, and have fun. She's a beautiful Earth. We only get one shot here - get out there and see all she has to offer. Char the Explorer : )

Google Maps and Bing Maps links for those customers who would like to research the street and aerial views further:
