10 acres of land for sale in Montello, Nevada by Idaho and Utah in Elko County. It sits just below the foothills of the Toano Mountains between Charlie Canyon and Hoppie Canyon which lead to the other side of the mountains. I’ve often seen hunters on the other side!
Its between Elko and Salt Lake City, Utah about an hour N of Wendover. It's a very rural off the beaten path area with wild horses and antelope roaming and stunning views across the Pilot Valley to the Pilot Mountains!
All of the photos were taken in the adjoining section 1 mile NE in 2004, 2005 and 2006. I’ve been out here probably 25 times and I hope to someday make it back! And I really mean that! The first time I ever drove thru the Toano Mountains from the west to the east I came to Charlie Canyon and was just stunned! I could see for miles across to Pilot Peak and the Tecoma and Pilot Valleys below me were a plush green! Wow it was hard for me to believe that this valley could be so green! Different parts of this valley have their own uniqueness and I love to sit up here and overlook the valley! It’s nice to see that I own a couple pieces of land here once again, even for a brief moment! : )
There are a few different roads that take you out to this part of the valley as seen in the aerial maps. We originally had two lots for sale adjoining each other but there is only one lot for sale left at this time - the lot furthest north as seen in the maps.
I usually take the graveled dirt road that heads west off the Gamble Ranch Road and continues thru the mountains. There is a dirt road leading along the southern section line 10 acres to the south of this property as seen in the aerial photos. It sits just 10 acres west of the east section line which is a dirt road as well. There are so many roads out in this area that you'll need to figure out which one is the quickest way back to town!
The Toano Mountains sit close by from the NW to the SW and continue on down to the S. There are pretty trees that filter down the hillsides she is so close by. I have explored the west side of the mountains and it is miles of jeep trails to explore with antelope running around.
Apparently there are elk out here too although I have not seen them myself but in October 2014 we were stopped by a hunter with a quad asking if we had seen any elk. He said they liked to hang out in the mountain just across the valley to the west. He also commented on a few people that had improved their properties on this side of the mountains and sure enough down the road a ways we spotted a cute cabin! I snapped a picture of his truck and quad and included it in the additional photos area - fun!
It has sweeping views of the Pilot Mountains Range from the NE to the SE. Pilot Peak sits to the SE at 10,716 feet and my oh my does this have some gorgeous views! Her peaks are ever changing with the seasons! Rhyolite Butte is a beautiful fascinating rock mesa at 5,965 feet sits at the NE end of this range and can be seen across the Tecoma Valley! When you get up close it really is pretty to look at and shoots straight up in the air, such a unique shape.
In 2012 I drove around the Pilot Mountains and included several photos and a video of it in the additional photos area. I found deer, elk, antelope, rabbits, a mirage on the Great Salt Lake Desert, and the pink, orange and purple sunset over the Pilot Mountains! I am not sure what's more stunning, the way the dry salt flat looks like real water or the stunning elk! Loved it!
A few locals educated me about how sacred these mountains were to the natives who lived here many years ago when we stopped in for a bite to eat at the Cowboy Bar Cafe in 2012. They told me that the Pilot Mountains, Toano Mountains and the valley between is filled with arrows, old sewing needs and lots more remnants from those who lived here many, many years ago!
We stopped at the Cowboy Bar Café again in 2013 for a bite to eat and to warm up and met a couple cowboys that said they worked at the Gamble Ranch and I spent the next hour bending their ear! They said it had been a very cold winter and it was common for some cattle to die and we had just finished picking up a big skull out by this property. I included a few photos in the additional photos area of these truly nice gentlemen - thanks guys!
Pilot Valley is the very first place I ever saw a herd of wild horses! I had heard about them before and they were so stunning – standing there watching me across the valley – tails blowing in the wind! I love my job - TYG!
The parcel and BLM maps shows there is a square mile of BLM land 10 acres to the east and another square mile 30 acres to the south. A section = 1 square mile = 640 acres. For more information on BLM land you can visit
BLM.gov.
There is a dedicated easement surrounding each parcel for ingress and egress on the parcel map. This land was once part of the large Gamble Ranch and it is open range land. This was split up many years ago but there still is the old ranch to the north of Montello. It is a beautiful drive up to this ranch and the road takes you on an incredible drive through a narrow fertile valley with gorgeous crops growing along the river!
This is a very rural and remote valley well off the beaten path with a few people scattered up and down it and with the town of Montello, population 138, being the hub for the valley. It offers a gas/mini grocery store, post office and restaurant. I don't ever recall NOT seeing an antelope when I visited this valley and I have seen wild horses roaming out here as well - absolutely stunning when you see them for your first time!
In 2013 we came across some people out exploring on a side by side just N of Montello. It was a family with a young child with them and they said they were out shedding. I asked what shedding was and learned that they were collecting antlers from the antelope and others that had shed them...ya ok I got it – fun photo below! : )
Elko is about 2 hours to the west where you will find a hospital and major shopping. Wendover is a larger town to the SE about an hour on Interstate 80 and people in this valley commute there for work as well as groceries. There is also a mine that has been expanding its operations along I80 to the S.
The property is zoned for either a home, manufactured home or RV. I think it would be a beautiful spot for a hunter to hang out by Charlie Canyon! Enjoy! Char the Explorer : )
