10 acres of rural off grid land for sale in northeast Nevada by Montello and Wendover in Elko County. It’s about 2.5 hours W of Salt Lake City, Utah sitting in the gorgeous Pilot Valley with stunning views of the Pilot Mountains. It's about 1.5 hours east of Elko and off the beaten path with wild horses and antelope roaming!
My notes say "Wow the views of the foothills of the Toano Mountains!" It sits right by the Toano Mountains. I really love to sit and marvel at her pretty treed hills and I like the way it curves out onto the valley floor down in this part of the valley tucking it away. I've stopped a few times out in this part of the valley to play on the rock outcroppings that pop out of the valley floor - not huge but fun to play on!
All of the photos were taken one mile north of this property in August 2015 of T38N R69E Section 31 NE4 and the surrounding views. It’s about 10 miles S of Montello as the crow flies and 3 miles W of the graveled Pilot Road. You can also get out to this part of the valley from Highway 233 to the west.
The road seen in the photos leads further SE thru this part of the valley. In image #61 you can see this property and the road leading thru this part of the valley. Over my shoulder on the right hand side of the photo there is a slight rise of a flat hill – you can barely notice it. It’s a very light brown color and it almost just looks like it’s blurry. I am more zoomed in on the hill in images 42 & 43. This property sits just to the right of where it flattens out on that hill.
This property sits about 1/3 of a mile west of that road. It crosses the west and north section line roads as seen in the aerial photos (a section = 1 square mile = 640 acres). It sits 10 acres east of the west section line as seen in the parcel map and is the way I would try to get closest to the property and should put you about 1/8 of a mile west which is 660 feet. The vegetation is pretty low in this area so you could probably drive the rest of the way if you had clearance of a truck or you could walk!
The valley slopes down from the west to the east here off Toano Mountains and this little hill keeps its rise going a bit before eventually dropping down again. You can see this in one of the aerial photos. The property sits at about 5234’ on its W and drops to about 5208’ on its E. The flat hill sits at about 5180’.
There were very few neighbors out in this area – one had a dog that sounded excited to see us in the white house seen in the photos. I believe the turquoise trailer is abandoned which sat further north. I see on Google Earth what I think looks like a trailers and animal pens about 6/10 of a mile SE tucked around the bottom of that hill. Otherwise no one around so a great place for privacy to watch the antelope and wild horses roam!
It has sweeping views of the Pilot Mountains Range from the NE to the SE. Pilot Peak sits to the SE at 10,716 feet and my oh my does this have some gorgeous views! Her peaks are ever changing with the seasons! Rhyolite Butte is a beautiful fascinating rock mesa at 5,965 feet sits at the NE end of this range and can be seen across the Tecoma Valley! When you get up close it really is pretty to look at and shoots straight up in the air, such a unique shape.
It sits just below the lower foothills of the treed Murdock Mountains and Toano Mountains which are up close offering great detail from the NW to the SW. I have explored the west side of the mountains and it is miles of jeep trails to explore with antelope running around. Apparently there are elk out here too although I have not seen them myself but in October 2014 we were stopped by a hunter with a quad asking if we had seen any elk. He said they liked to hang out in the mountain just across the valley to the west. He also commented on a few people that had improved their properties on this side of the mountains and sure enough down the road a ways we spotted a cute cabin! I snapped a picture of his truck and quad and included it in the additional photos area - fun!
A few locals educated me about how sacred these mountains were to the natives who lived here many years ago when we stopped in for a bite to eat at the Cowboy Bar Cafe in 2012. They told me that the Pilot Mountains, Toano Mountains and the valley between is filled with arrows, old sewing needs and lots more remnants from those who lived here many, many years ago!
We stopped at the Cowboy Bar Café again in 2013 for a bite to eat and to warm up and met a couple cowboys that said they worked at the Gamble Ranch and I spent the next hour bending their ear! They said it had been a very cold winter and it was common for some cattle to die and we had just finished picking up a big skull out by this property. I included a few photos in the additional photos area of these truly nice gentlemen - thanks guys!
Pilot Valley is the very first place I ever saw a herd of wild horses! I had heard about them before and they were so stunning – standing there watching me across the valley – tails blowing in the wind! I love my job - TYG!
The parcel and BLM maps show this property sits 10 acres east of 640 acres of BLM land and this section of land is surrounded by another 3 square miles. A section = 1 square mile = 640 acres. For more information on BLM land you can visit www.glm.gov.
There is a dedicated easement surrounding each parcel for ingress and egress on the parcel map. This land was once part of the large Gamble Ranch and it is open range land. This was split up many years ago but there still is the old ranch to the north of Montello. It is a beautiful drive up to this ranch and the road takes you on an incredible drive through a narrow fertile valley with gorgeous crops growing along the river!
This is a very rural and remote valley well off the beaten path with a few people scattered up and down it and with the town of Montello, population 138, being the hub for the valley. It offers a gas/mini grocery store, post office and restaurant. I don't ever recall NOT seeing an antelope when I visited this valley and I have seen wild horses roaming out here as well - absolutely stunning when you see them for your first time!
In 2013 we came across some people out exploring on a side by side just N of Montello. It was a family with a young child with them and they said they were out shedding. I asked what shedding was and learned that they were collecting antlers from the antelope and others that had shed them...ya ok I got it – fun photo below! : )
Elko is about 2 hours to the west where you will find a hospital and major shopping. Wendover is a larger town to the SE about an hour on Interstate 80 and people in this valley commute there for work as well as groceries. There is also a mine that has been expanding its operations along I80 to the S.
The property is zoned for either a home, manufactured home or RV. I sure think this is a beautiful place to hang out and watch the wild horses and antelope roam! And you get to watch the snow on Pilot Peak! Enjoy! Char the Explorer : )
