10 acres of land for sale in NE Elko County, Nevada by Montello and Wendover close to the Idaho Utah State line with lots of privacy. Gorgeous property has terrific views of the Pilot Mountains only 3 miles away. It's about 2 hours W of Salt Lake City. I think this is a beauty! The property is zoned for either a home or RV!
All of the photos were taken in October 2014 only about 20 acres NE along the road that leads along the section line so you can easily see this property in the photos as well! The image numbers are marked at the top of the photos and images #31 – 34 and #40 are looking SE towards this property. Wooden double strand power poles run about 10 acres to the west just on the east side of the section line as seen in the photos and aerial photos. I’m not sure if you can connect to these poles or not and you would need to ask the local power company.
It sits only about 1.5 miles east of graveled Pilot Road which has power running along it and is the main road that leads through this part of the valley. There is decent access to the area and I would take the section line road that runs 10 acres to the south off Pilot Road. I see in the aerial photos there is a jeep trail that takes off the section line to the east and runs NE thru the property. It appears to continues for a few miles up into Birch Canyon to the NE in the Pilot Mountains. It also connects to a jeep trail that leads SE into Cove Springs where an aqueduct comes out of the mountains down thru the valley about one mile N of this property and continues to Montello.
The property had a gentle slope to the SW down towards the valley floor. There were pretty fall colors in the low vegetation. It looks like there has been cows grazing in the area and its covered with short vegetation and then grass and soft dirt. There are a few scattered homes mostly to the south but pretty much no one close by so lots of privacy!
Wow what a beautiful part of the valley this is! From the NE to the SE across the Tecoma and Pilot Valleys are stunning long views of the Pilot Mountains. They actually only sit about 3 miles due east and she is so close by you can see the trees filtering down her hillsides and good detail in her peaks! Pilot Peak sits about nine miles SE across the Pilot Valley. At 10,716 feet, she is the highest peak in the Pilot Mountain Range and can be seen for miles across the valley but wow she’s close by with fabulous details in her peak! Rhyolite Butte, a cool rock mesa formation at the north end of the range can be seen across the Tecoma Valley. She is so interesting to look at up close, her vertical rock sides jut straight up into the air and she looks so stoic!
My Grandfather told me I was related to the great Kit Carson and I read an interesting story about how Pilot Peak got its name. It was an easily recognized landmark from the Great Salt Lake Desert and during John C. Fremont's third expedition mapping the Great Basin, he sent Kit Carson ahead to scout for water sources to see if his entire party could cross the desert. Carson found a perennial spring just east of the peak and lit a large bonfire signaling Fremont that the crossing was possible.
In 2012 I traveled around the east side of the Pilot Mountains and found herd after herd of deer and elk, rabbits, a mirage on the Great Salt Lake Desert, and the pink, orange and purple sunset over the Pilot Mountains! It was well worth the 2 hour drive and I included a video of it in the additional photos area!
Across the narrow valley from the NW to the SW are beautiful views of Murdock Mountains and the Toano Mountain Range. It was a pretty sunset over the mountains that night! A few locals educated me about how sacred these mountains were to the natives who lived here many years ago when we stopped in for a bite to eat at the Cowboy Bar Cafe in 2012. They told me that the Pilot Mountains, Toano Mountains and the valley between is filled with arrows, old sewing needs and lots more remnants from those who lived here many, many years ago!
I have explored the west side of the mountains and it is miles of jeep trails to explore with antelope running around. Apparently there are elk out here too although I have not seen them myself but in October 2014 we were stopped by a hunter with a quad asking if we had seen any elk. He said they liked to hang out in the mountain just across the valley to the west. He also commented on a few people that had improved their properties on this side of the mountains and sure enough down the road a ways we spotted a cute cabin! I snapped a picture of his truck and quad and included it in the additional photos area - fun!
We stopped at the Cowboy Bar Café again in 2013 for a bite to eat and to warm up and met a couple cowboys that said they worked at the Gamble Ranch and I spent the next hour bending their ear! They said it had been a very cold winter and it was common for some cattle to die and we had just finished picking up a big skull out by this property. I included a few photos in the additional photos area of these truly nice gentlemen - thanks guys!
There is a dedicated easement surrounding each parcel for ingress and egress on the parcel map. This land was once part of the large Gamble Ranch and it is open range land. This was split up many years ago but there still is the old ranch to the north of Montello. It is a beautiful drive up to this ranch and the road takes you on an incredible drive through a narrow fertile valley with gorgeous crops growing along the river!
The parcel map shows where this 10 acres sits within the section. The BLM map shows the property sits 10 acres north of 1 square mile of BLM land and 10 acres east of another square mile of BLM land. A section = 1 square mile = 640 acres. BLM land is shown in yellow and private land is shown in white on the BLM map. For more information on BLM land you can visit www.glm.gov.
This is a very rural and remote valley well off the beaten path with a few people scattered up and down it and with the town of Montello, population 138, being the hub for the valley. It offers a gas/mini grocery store, post office and restaurant. I don't ever recall NOT seeing an antelope when I visited this valley and I have seen wild horses roaming out here as well - absolutely stunning when you see them for your first time! One afternoon I came across a family with a pink baby blanket out exploring on a side by side who said they were out shedding. I asked what shedding was and learned that they were collecting antlers from the antelope and others that had shed them...ya ok I got it! It looked like a fun family affair and I thought they sure are starting their princess out young! : )
Elko is about 2 hours to the west where you will find a hospital and major shopping. Wendover is a larger town to the SE about an hour on Interstate 80 and people in this valley commute there for work as well as groceries. There is also a mine that has been expanding its operations along I80 to the S.
I sure love exploring the Pilot Mountains and have seen deer, elk, antelope, rabbits, a mirage on the Great Salt Lake Desert, and the pink, orange and purple sunset over the Pilot Mountains! A picture is worth a thousand words and its such a pretty spot right in front of Pilot Peak! Enjoy! Char the Explorer : )
