Char's Update on the $250 Million Facebook Data Center and the Morris Road Projects!
The Village of Los Lunas announced that Facebook will build a data center there, a $250 million investment for the first phase! I read that it will break ground in October 2016. There could be up to six phases. It will stimulate 200-500 construction jobs on site daily and once completed a minimum of 30 full time jobs. It will be located just SW of the Intersection of Interstate 25 and Highway 6 as noted in the map.

Facebook Data Center and the Morris Road Project.
A quote from the cities website "the data center construction will generate millions of dollars in economic impact beyond the amount directly spent by the company, and typically support thousands of jobs over multiple years. And finally, there is often a ”follow the leader” effect – once a large data center project locates in an area, other related businesses will follow shortly afterwards."
I also read about the Interstate 25 interchange and the East-West Corridor project they are working on referred to as Morris Road on the map. This is a 4 mile stretch of road that would add a new bridge over the Rio Grande River, a new intersection at NM 47 and is estimated to cost $49 million.
Based upon the maps I saw it looks like this corridor would end on it's east side approximately 2.75 miles NW of Rio del Oro as the crow flies. We marked this on the map as well.
Click here to reach the cities website where you will find more information about both these projects!
Located about 20 miles South of Albuquerque, it was once a quiet agricultural area, but the Village and Valencia County has grown to over 80,000 and is one of the fastest growing in the state. I remember one of my mentors Big Steve telling me that if I ever came across land in Los Lunas to hold on to it for an investment! Huh that man was right once again!

One acre building lots for sale about 40 minutes S of Albuquerque, New Mexico in Socorro County. It’s close to the Rio Grande and Interstate 25 for a quick trip into Belen and Los Lunas, NM. I sure love the views of the Manzano Mountains from this part of the Rio Grande Estates! There are minimal zoning restrictions allowing for a home, mobile home or RV.
All of the photos were taken in May 2009 and October 2007 of Unit 6 Block 252 along Jacinto Road and we noted this in the maps. This is the far, east side of the subdivision and you can see in the photos that there are great views in all direction across the Rio Grande Basin of the Manzano Mountains, Sierra Ladrone Mountains, Black Butte, and the bosque along the Rio Grande!
Guadalupe Ave is a dirt road along the north of block 256. Flora Ave is a dirt road along the north of block 281. Beatrice Ave is a dirt road along the south of block 252. Jacinto and Lazano Streets are bladed graveled/dirt roads at the ends of these blocks that lead south about 2.5 miles to Highway 60. Highway 60 leads west to Interstate 25 about 10 miles SW.
The area is mostly flat with scattered low vegetation and grass. There are a few neighbors out in this part but for the most part it remains undeveloped with lots of privacy. There is a house to the west that has surrounded itself by tires which is a bummer otherwise it is a beautiful view. I did not see power out in this area so you would need to consider alternative sources like solar or a generator.
The Rio Grande River flows 6 miles west as the crow flies and you can see a bit of the tops of the trees along the bosque. She is 1,896 miles long and is the fourth longest river system in North America! Beyond that is a pretty view of the rim of the mesa with pretty rich red colors – a peaceful setting!
There sure are beautiful long views from the NE to the SE of the Manzano Mountains where you will find part of the Cibola National Forest. She is so close by there is great detail in her peaks and you can see the trees filtering down her hillsides!
To the south across the other side of highway 60, Black Butte pops up out of the valley floor adding more things to look at! She sure is out of place and interesting!
Across the other side of the valley from the NW to the SW are the Sierra Ladrones with Ladron Peak at 9,210 feet. She towers almost 4,500 feet above the Rio Grande Valley! Part of the range is included in the Sevellita National Wildlife Refuge which sits just below this subdivision as seen in the maps. Animal species include mountain lion, pronghorn, bear, and desert bighorn sheep. I spent a couple hours exploring the part down by the river one day and saw some beautiful wildlife as seen in the area photos.
The wide open valley is called the Middle Rio Grande Basin, aka the Albuquerque Basin. It is one of the largest and deepest basins covering 3100 square miles and the Rio Grande, the 4th longest river in N America, flows thru it from the N to the S. The Rio Puerco is a tributary to the Rio Grande and these two meet up at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge.
The Rio Grande Estates adjoins this refuge to the south so there is a river to go explore in your back yard! I spent an afternoon there by the Rio Grande and saw ducks, quail and a badger! That’s the closest I’ve ever been to a badger and I included these photos in the additional photos section! We also included maps showing where the refugee and rivers sit from the subdivision.
There is a large labor force in Los Lunas and Belen that work in Albuquerque and they can now take the Rail Runner into Albuquerque! A few times now I have caught the parking lot full and the train with her cool roadrunner on top! I really enjoy the art on it and read that the name is a play on the state bird the roadrunner.
Many consider this a great place to retire because of the relaxed lifestyle: no lawn to mow unless you plant one, pueblo-style buildings, and year round accessibility to Albuquerque 30 miles away where the International Airport is located.
When asked for a place with minimal zoning restrictions, no landowners association, and RV use this is one of the places I refer people. The area boasts of having nearly 80% sunny days and this sure is a pretty valley to hang out in your RV and soak up the sun! Char the Explorer : )
