2.06 acre lots for sale about 5 miles SW of Montello, Nevada by Idaho and Utah in Elko County. Cheap land by Murdock Mountain in the foothills of the Toano Mountains about 30 miles N of Interstate 80, and 2 hours W of Salt Lake City. This rural valley is filled with tons of antelope roaming and is a hunters retreat! Your choice of lots in the Sunland Acres at this price!
All of the pictures were taken in October 2014 of the Sunland Acres Unit 1 which sits 2 miles NE of this section and you can see this unit in the photos as well looking SE and we noted it in the maps. I believe that images #4 to 6 as well as panoramics #37 and #56 are looking SW towards this unit. It sits by Murdock Mountain which is the tallest mountain on the right half of image #56. There was a family of antelope out grazing on our way and I included a few of those photos.
There is a bladed dirt/gravel road leading out to this area that goes thru the subdivision. The subdivision roads were bladed some time ago and a bit overgrown on some from lack of use but still easy to get around. Some of the old street signs are still there if you look carefully. It’s off the beaten path yet a pretty easy drive to paved highway 233 and the small town of Montello.
I studied google earth and see the lots have a gentle slope down off the foothills from the west to the east. There are a few cabins, RV’s and mobile homes scattered about the area and you can see the closest neighbors in the aerial photos. It’s zoned for either a home, manufactured home or RV.
It is a pretty setting by the foothills of the Toano Mountain Range with Murdock Mountain, the highest peak, about 3 miles west. You can see the trees filtering down her mountains from the NW to the SW. I have explored the west side of the Toano Mountains and it is miles of jeep trails to explore in a 4WD with antelope running around.
Apparently there are elk out here too although I have not seen them myself but in October 2014 we were stopped by a hunter with a quad asking if we had seen any elk. He said they liked to hang out in the mountain just across the valley to the west. He also commented on a few people that had improved their properties on this side of the mountains and sure enough down the road a ways we spotted a cute cabin! I snapped a picture of his truck and quad and included it in the additional photos area - fun!
Across the valley from the NE to the SE is the Pilot Mountain Range with Rhyolite Butte, a unique rock formation that rises to 5,965 feet at the north end of this range. Pilot Peak sits to the SE at 10,716 feet and my oh my does this have some gorgeous views! Her peaks can be seen across the valley to the SE and are ever changing with the seasons!
My Grandfather told me I was related to the great Kit Carson and I read an interesting story about how Pilot Peak got its name. It was an easily recognized landmark from the Great Salt Lake Desert and during John C. Fremont's third expedition mapping the Great Basin, he sent Kit Carson ahead to scout for water sources to see if his entire party could cross the desert. Carson found a perennial spring just east of the peak and lit a large bonfire signaling Fremont that the crossing was possible. I have been so drawn to this valley since I first started exploring land in 2001 and found an even greater reason to love it! I get happy chills when I hear Kit Carson was somewhere before me.
A few locals educated me about how sacred these mountains were to the natives who lived here many years ago when we stopped in for a bite to eat at the Cowboy Bar Cafe in 2012. They told me that the Pilot Mountains, Toano Mountains and the valley between is filled with arrows, old sewing needs and lots more remnants from those who lived here many, many years ago! I have spent a few days exploring the west side of the Toano Mountains and it is miles of jeep trails to explore with antelope running around.
We stopped at the Cowboy Bar Café again in 2013 for a bite to eat and to warm up and met a couple cowboys that said they worked at the Gamble Ranch and I spent the next hour bending their ear! They said it had been a very cold winter and it was common for some cattle to die and we had just finished picking up a big skull out by this property. I included a few photos in the additional photos area of these truly nice gentlemen - thanks guys!
Wendover is a larger town to the SE about an hour on Interstate 80 and people in this valley commute there for work as well as groceries. There is also a mine that has been expanding its operations along I80 to the S.
The big town of Elko is about 1.5 hours west where you will find a hospital and major shopping. I saw signs along the interstate by Elko advertising that they need workers! I have heard several times over the past two years about the shortage of homes for the workers in the Elko area! It’s so nice to see the continued good economy there!
The section of land is surrounded by 4 square miles of BLM land. A section of land equals one square mile or 640 acres. For further information about BLM land visit BLM.gov. I have often seen hunters coming out of the Pilot and Toano Mountains and I think this would be a great spot to put a cabin or park your camper.
This is a very rural and remote valley well off the beaten path with a few people scattered up and down it and with the town of Montello, population 138, being the hub for the valley. It offers a gas/mini grocery store, post office and restaurant. I don't ever recall NOT seeing an antelope when I visited this valley and I have seen wild horses roaming out here as well - absolutely stunning when you see them for your first time!
It would be a great spot for someone seeking cheap land for an off grid setting or a place to put your RV while you hunt or explore. Enjoy! Char the Explorer : )
