1.03 acres land for sale in Elko, Nevada about 8 miles SW of town overlooking farms and hay fields, the town of Elko and the Humboldt River as it meanders thru the valley floor below - oh she's pretty! It's about 3.5 hours W of Salt Lake City.
All of the photos and videos were taken in August 2018. This is a corner lot with 14th St is bladed along the S and Walker Ave bladed along the W. The road would need improved for consistent use in a few spots and I suggest you take a truck with 4wd to explore it. It's not too far from Bullion Road which is the road that leads from Elko out to the area.
I was thrilled as I drove almost to the top of the big rolling hill that this property sits up on because there's fabulous view of the farms to the W and SW! There is a main drag road that cuts down thru the subdivision which runs about 2 lots W as seen in the aerial photos. I don't believe this is a true easement thru the subdivision but its such great access and the road I use.
I played with Google Earth a bit and followed this road to the bottom of the subdivision and then west a little over ¼ mile where it turns south and crosses a cattle guard. It leads to the S Fork of the Humboldt River which flows out of the Elko Hills. I’m not sure if there is a locked gate as it looks like it goes out on to private property. I noticed a car was parked by the river that day and I wonder how many people know about this little spot – I just found it! If you go check it out you’ll have to let me know!
The property slopes down off the hill from it's SW corner to the N and E and is nicely covered in tall sage brush. From the NW to the NE is the N Fork of the Humboldt River meandering thru the valley floor with the railroad tracks and I-80 on the other side of the river. And beyond the valley is a great view of the Adobe Mountains!
There is an off grid home that sits around the NE corner of the subdivision as seen in the photos with horses and a grove of trees. Otherwise I've only seen a few RV's out here at times.
The parcel map shows the S. Fork of the Humboldt River flowing thru the very SW corner of this unit and there is a note written on it that says for public use. It was dry the only time I was down by it. There is BLM land to the S and the E of the subdivision as seen in the maps. I’m not sure if you can drive down to this river but you can go for a walk on the BLM land! Each square on the BLM map equals one square mile. For more information on BLM land you can visit
BLM.gov.
The town of Elko is 8 miles NE and wow has it really grown on this side of town over the years. I think this is a great investment area as there are new homes being built 4 miles NE along Bullion Road called Hamilton Stage which I first noticed being built in 2013. By looking at google earth it appears to be about half built out. I did a search and see lots going for $45,000 and homes for over $300,000!
The Adobe Range is located N and NW of Elko, Nevada, runs for about 80 miles and has an area of about 314 square miles. Its highest point is an unnamed summit of 8,134 feet. Elko County contains the majority of Nevada’s mule deer and this range is home to one of the largest mule deer and antelope herds in the state. They migrate between their summer range in the Snake and Adobe ranges to winter range in the Pequop Mountains. The N Fork of the Humboldt River borders the Adobe range to the south and east.
One of the largest herds I’ve seen in my life in 2004 while exploring this area!
Most of the Adobes are a checkerboard of public (Bureau of Land Management) and private ownership. This pattern is attributed to the Pacific Railway Act of 1862, where the federal government gave railroad companies free land in alternating sections as an incentive and a means to finance the overwhelming task of linking east with west by rail.
While researching the Adobe Mountain Range I found a posting on summitpost.org of someone that hiked to the peak. They shared how to get out to the trail and the way up to the peak. They also shared several fabulous photos overlooking across the valley and Humboldt River to the Ruby Mountains. It seems that this is becoming quite known to climbers as you will see in the photos! Cool!
The Ruby Mountains sit south behind the Elko Hills. Often called the Swiss Alps of Nevada they rise to 11,387 feet at Ruby Dome! These mountains are the locals outdoor playground when it comes to hunting, fishing and exploring.
The Hamilton-Bullion Trail sits 1.5 miles east of the property. This 11 mile loop was made with efforts from the Elko Convention and Visitors Authority and the BLM to establish a route for horses, hikers and mountain bikers. It goes from Elko onto BLM land - a pretty cool trail that takes you over hills offering scenic views of the Ruby Mountains, South Fork Reservoir and the Humboldt River. I've been to South Fork Reservoir a few times now and included photos of that hot spot for fishing and bird watching in the additional photos area below! Sounds fun to me to take a horse ride on it!
The town of Elko is so close by and you can see the local businesses and new growth with your naked eye! I have really seen this side of Elko growing since I first started exploring here in 2002. There is a newer bridge overpass over the Humboldt River in town that making easy access to Bullion Road.
And once you make it to town be sure and stop at my favorite Basque restaurant, the Star Hotel for one of their fabulous garlic steak sandwiches! In 1959 a Basque tradition began with a celebration that brought sheepherders and cattle ranchers into town for a day of celebration. Now known as the National Basque Festival, this event takes place around the 4th of July at the Elko County Fairgrounds.
Within an hour’s drive of the property are some famous fishing holes, Wildhorse Reservoir, Ruby Lake, and South Fork Reservoir!
Wildhorse Reservoir is a 2,800 acre premium trout reservoir 60 miles north of the town of Elko. In 2011 I ran into some men who had just hauled a 350 pound elk from the Wild Horse State Recreation Area and of course I have included photos of those as well! Hunters know the area for its elk, deer, mountain lion and bird but it's the fishermen that tell tall stories about ice fishing at Wildhorse.
Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge sits on the SE side of the Ruby Mountains. With over 12,000 acres this area is a special habitat to over 207 species of birds providing feeding, nesting and a resting stop in the Pacific Flyway. On one of my first visits to Elko County some nice gentlemen told me that Ruby Lake was the best fishing in the state!
South Fork Reservoir and State Rec area is about 20 minutes S of Elko. It covers 1,650 acres and is surrounded by 2,200 acres of wildlife-filled meadow land and rolling hills and known for its trophy-class trout and bass.
What a great spot to watch the ever changing seasons of the farms! Enjoy Char :)
