1.13 acres land for sale only about 15 miles NE of Elko, Nevada with beautiful views of the Ruby Mountains and Elko Hills! Elko sits in NE Nevada near Idaho between Reno and Salt Lake City, Utah. Investment lot just off a graveled road and only 4 miles from Interstate 80 in Elko County, NV.

All of the photos were taken in April 2012 standing in front of this lot as well as some taken at the west end of the block as seen in the parcel map. 20th Street is a bladed dirt road seen in the photos that you would need to improve for a car to access. I also included a few photos of Coal Mine Canyon Rd, the graveled/oiled county maintained road that leads 4 miles North of Interstate to about 850 feet west of this property (that's about 1/16 of a mile).

It's about a ten minute drive NE of Elko and there is a gas station/mini store at the Ryndon exit #314 that I frequently stop at to get a homemade sandwich! What a beautiful off-grid property so close to the county maintained road and I80!

The property has a slope from the E to the W as it falls down off the hill to the valley floor. I studied google earth and believe that this property sits right below the big hills more on the flatter part of the hill and can best be seen in images 49, 50, 55, 56, 60 & 62. The image numbers are at the top of the images. We also included a few aerial photos that show how the property sits on the side of the rolling hill. It is a bit up higher over the valley floor offering some great views! It's covered with healthy tall sage brush and grass.

My notes say "Oh My Gosh" what beautiful pretty views of the Elko Hills & Ruby Mountains! They loom large across the valley to the S and SW! The Rubies are so big they tower over the Elko Hills! Called the Swiss Alps of Nevada her snow-capped peaks reach up to 11,317 feet at Ruby Dome and offer beautiful views to this subdivision! Sometimes they are filled with snow, sometimes a burnt orange in fall colors, always changing and always stunning!

There are fabulous views from the NW to the SW of the Adobe Range as she tumbles down to the valley towards the west. She is definitely an unsung hero compared to the Rubies, but she also has lots of character in her and I remember thinking how unique some of her cool peaks are when I first started taking photos of her about ten years ago.

They run for about 80 miles and have an area of about 314 square miles. It’s highest summit is 8,134 feet. It's on the list of Nevada’s 172 Prominent Peaks! I found a posting on of someone that hiked to the peak. They shared how to get out to the trail and the way up to the peak. They also shared several fabulous photos overlooking across the valley and Humboldt River to the Ruby Mountains. It seems that this is becoming quite known to climbers as you will see in the photos! Cool!

Elko County contains the majority of Nevada’s mule deer and this range is home to one of the largest mule deer and antelope herds in the state. They migrate between their summer range in the Snake and Adobe ranges to winter range in the Pequop Mountains. The N Fork of the Humboldt River borders the Adobe range to the south and east.

Most of the Adobes are a checkerboard of public (Bureau of Land Management) and private ownership and this land borders 1 square mile of BLM land (640 acres) on its southern border. This pattern is attributed to the Pacific Railway Act of 1862, where the federal government gave railroad companies free land in alternating sections as an incentive and a means to finance the overwhelming task of linking east with west by rail.

One of the largest herds I’ve seen in my life in 2004 while exploring this area!

Within an hour’s drive of the property are some famous fishing holes, Wildhorse Reservoir, Ruby Lake, and South Fork Reservoir!

Wildhorse Reservoir is a 2,800 acre premium trout reservoir 60 miles north of the town of Elko. In 2011 I ran into some men who had just hauled a 350 pound elk from the Wild Horse State Recreation Area and of course I have included photos of those as well! Hunters know the area for its elk, deer, mountain lion and bird but it's the fishermen that tell tall stories about ice fishing at Wildhorse.

Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge sits on the SE side of the Ruby Mountains. With over 12,000 acres this area is a special habitat to over 207 species of birds providing feeding, nesting and a resting stop in the Pacific Flyway. On one of my first visits to Elko County some nice gentlemen told me that Ruby Lake was the best fishing in the state!

South Fork Reservoir and State Rec area is about 20 minutes S of Elko. It covers 1,650 acres and is surrounded by 2,200 acres of wildlife-filled meadow land and rolling hills and known for its trophy-class trout and bass.

The zoning allows for a home, manufactured home or year round RV use! I noticed a neighbor about 1/2 mile S that has a little getaway place with a toy hauler/RV and some quads. It looks like they go out here to play and have fun.

There is power down the road a few miles towards the interstate. There is also power on the other side of the mountains to the east as there are homes there, but still quite a ways distance. You would need to contact the local power company to know the cost to bring it. At this time alternative sources like solar would want to be considered.

The section of land that this property is located in is close to several square miles of BLM land as seen in the BLM map. (BLM land is in orange). A section = 1 square mile = 640 acres. For more information on BLM land you can visit

I have really seen the areas NE along I80 continue to grow. It seems it’s mostly the locals who buy properties out here to hang out in their RV in the country side or for investment. You’re still a quick drive to the garlic steak sandwich at the Star Hotel in bustling downtown Elko! I myself own a piece of land about 10 miles N off Coal Mine Canyon Road. I keep telling myself some day I am going to build myself a little place there and watch it snow on the Ruby Mountains!

I think these lots so close to town are worth investing in. Come have fun in Cowboy Country hunting, fishing or just watching the antelope roam! Enjoy! Char the Explorer : )

Elko County Area Photos

A video of my journeys thru Meadow Valley Ranchos Unit 11, the Hamilton-Bullion Trail and the South Fork State Reservoir where I sat thru a cattle drive in Elko, Nevada!

The Hamilton-Bullion Trail is an 11 mile loop ]for horses, hikers and mountain bikers. It goes from Elko onto BLM land and over hills offering scenic views of the Ruby Mountains, South Fork Reservoir and the Humboldt River.

South Fork covers 1,650 acres and is surrounded by 2,200 acres of wildlife-filled meadow land and rolling hills. Known for its trophy-class trout and bass, and bird watching.

Elko County is located in northeastern Nevada, 295 miles east of Reno and 237 miles west of Salt Lake City. With 17,135 square miles it is one of the largest counties in the USA and is the heart of NE Nevada. A book listing American towns with the highest quality of life declared Elko, Nevada, "The Best Small Town in America." It is a small city, and a booming trading and service center for a mining and ranching area roughly the size of New England. In 2005 has named Elko City as 1 of the "Top 100 Places To Live" in the United States.

The population of Elko County is over 52,000, the town of Elko is over 18,000 and the town of Spring Creek is 12,000. Lately, Elko has evolved into a showcase for Western American Folk Art. Long famous for the National Basque Festival, held each Independence Day, a new era in Elko's cultural history began in 1985, when the first Cowboy Poetry Gathering was held. Estimates are 8000 - 10000 people attended the festival this January!

The weather in Elko County is considered ideal by many. Summer finds hot, dry afternoons with temperatures in the 90s, cooling to the low 40s and 50s by morning. Winters are moderate with lows typically in the 20s or 30s. Daytime highs during the winter months are in the 40s or 50s. Snowfall averages 42 inches per year and generally melts quickly. Yearly rainfall ranges from 9 to 10.5 inches. Sunny skies are usually seen over 300 days a year!

The land is mountainous and interspersed with low, flat valleys. The Humboldt River flows through the county, with the Ruby Mountains stretching across it in a north-south direction. The elevation in the valleys is about 5000 and reaches up to 11,300 feet at Ruby Dome. The elevation of Pilot Peak on the east side of Elko County reaches up to 10,716 feet. Elko County provides unlimited recreational opportunities with fishing, big game hunting (mule deer, elk, antelope and bighorn sheep), snowmobiling, ice fishing, mountain biking, hiking, camping, boating and skiing.
