2.07 acre building lot for sale about 12 miles NE of Elko Nevada in the Humboldt River Ranchos! It has such pretty views of the Ruby Mountains and Elko Hills, and quick access to Interstate 80 in Elko County, NV. There are a few cute neighbors in the area that have power and a few new homes have been built here! What a great spot for someone looking to build a home in rural Cowboy Country in the countryside or an investment! Elko sits in NE Nevada near Idaho between Reno, NV and Salt Lake City, Utah.
All of the pictures were taken 1 blocks SW, about 1/4 mile from this property at the corner of Cleveland and Oragrande in April 2013. It was a cloudy day and the photos don’t do it any justice – you just are going to have to see it for yourself!
There was great access to the area. We took Interstate 80 about ten minutes NE of Elko to Coal Mine Canyon Road which is also known as Rynden Road on my gps. It is exit 314 and there is a minimart/gas station there. I would head north off the interstate about 2.5 miles to Quartzite Drive which is bladed by the county and then west. It is a section line as seen in the maps and called a few different things depending on the maps. It runs north along the end of this block 3 lots to the N. This is a corner lot on Arthur Ave and Oragrande Drive which are both bladed dirt roads. The neighbor in the block to the east appears to be dropping south on Johnson Avenue to the east end of Oragrande Drive and it does appear to be a more improved road looking at Google Earth. Power appears to be about 4/10 miles SW along Mckinley Ave just S of North Point Drive.
The area has really nice homes sprinkled about. I studied google earth and the lot sits up on a rolling hill which looks to have about a 10 foot roll from the S to the N. The area is nicely covered in tall sagebrush and a bit of scattered grass and the dirt was nice and soft. I’ve always loved this subdivision and it’s been fun watching it slowly grow over the last 14 years. “Oh what a view, sagebrush heaven, and bring your picnic basket and blanket” are a few of the notes I've written to myself over the years about this little place.
The huge Elko Hills sit huge to the S and beyond then the beautiful Ruby Mountains to the E, SE, and SW. Called the Swiss Alps of Nevada her snowcapped peaks reach up to 11,317 feet at Ruby Dome. What a pretty view across the valley to the mountains loaded with snow. Oh what a pretty place to sit and watch it snow on the Rubies!
NW to SW to W to SW is a long view of the Adobe Mountains with her cool peaks starting to green on the hillsides for spring with a few scattered flowers blooming. The Adobes are located N and NW of Elko and runs for about 80 miles and has an area of about 314 square miles. It’s highest summit is 8,134 feet. She is definitely an unsung hero compared to the Rubies but she also has lots of character in her and I remember thinking how unique some of her cool peaks are when I first started taking photos of her about fifteen years ago.
Most of the Adobes are a checkerboard of public (Bureau of Land Management) and private ownership. This pattern is attributed to the Pacific Railway Act of 1862, where the federal government gave railroad companies free land in alternating sections as an incentive and a means to finance the overwhelming task of linking east with west by rail.
Elko County contains the majority of Nevada’s mule deer and this range is home to one of the largest mule deer and antelope herds in the state. They migrate between their summer range in the Snake and Adobe ranges to winter range in the Pequop Mountains. The N Fork of the Humboldt River borders the Adobe range to the south and east.
One of the largest herds I’ve seen in my life in 2004 while exploring this area!
Devils Gate is a big ranch 15 miles N and well worth the drive! I own a piece of land that overlooks this ranch and I keep telling myself someday I am going to build myself a little place there and watch it snow on the Rubies! When I went by the ranch in December 2014 I spotted a huge herd of mule deer out grazing in their hay field! It gives you an idea what the landscaped Adobe Mountains look like in the winter time snow.
Within an hour’s drive of the property are some famous fishing holes, Wildhorse Reservoir, Ruby Lake, and South Fork Reservoir! On one of my first visits to Elko County these two nice gentlemen told me that Ruby Lake was the best fishing in the state!
Wildhorse Reservoir is a 2,800 acre premium trout reservoir 60 miles north of the town of Elko. In 2011 I ran into some men who had just hauled a 350 pound elk from the Wild Horse State Recreation Area and of course I have included photos of those as well! Hunters know the area for its elk, deer, mountain lion and bird but it's the fishermen that tell tall stories about ice fishing at Wildhorse.
Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge sits on the SE side of the Ruby Mountains. With over 12,000 acres this area is a special habitat to over 207 species of birds providing feeding, nesting and a resting stop in the Pacific Flyway. On one of my first visits to Elko County some nice gentlemen told me that Ruby Lake was the best fishing in the state!
South Fork Reservoir and State Rec area is about 20 minutes S of Elko. It covers 1,650 acres and is surrounded by 2,200 acres of wildlife-filled meadow land and rolling hills and known for its trophy-class trout and bass.
The BLM (Bureau of Land Management) map shows there are several sections (1 section = 1 square mile = 640 acres) of BLM land starting 1 mile to the NW. Each square on the BLM map equals one square mile. For more information on BLM land you can visit
BLM.gov.
The zoning allows for a home, manufactured home or year round RV use! I have really seen the areas along Interstate 80 continuing to grow and it seems it’s mostly the locals who buy properties out here to build a home in the country side. Yet you’re still within a reasonable drive to the bustling town of Elko for a garlic steak sandwich at the Star Hotel in downtown Elko! I see signs in town and along the interstate that said HIRING and I continue to think that these lots so close to town are worth investing in.
I don’t come across properties for sale here very often as they are just out of my price range usually! I think this would be a great spot for someone to build their own home or hold as an investment! Enjoy! Char the Explorer : )
