In 2004 I snapped this photo and wrote "what a beautiful sight this was! While out exploring land by Deeth we came across the largest herd of pronghorn I had ever seen. As we got closer they took off over the mountain giving us a great show!" I've learned that Elko County contains the majority of Nevada’s mule deer and they migrate between their summer in the Snake and Adobe Mountain Ranges to winter in the Pequop Mountains. Property Photos

The first 30 photos were taken in June 2012 of Meadow Valley Ranchos Unit 8 Block 24 Lot 11 and the surrounding views. The rest of the photos were taken over the years showing Coal Mine Canyon Road which Buddy my boyfriend helped explore! The cowgirl was south near the interstate where the gas station is as well.

PROPERTY INFORMATION

1.13 acres of land for sale about 17 miles NE of Elko, Nevada. When we went to look at a property across the street, there was no one around! All I could hear was the wind and the the smell of sage was beautiful! Oh I love Cowboy Country! Elko sits in northeastern Nevada near the Nevada Idaho Oregon border between Reno, NV and Salt Lake City, Utah.

The first 30 photos were taken of the lot across the street to the NW in 2012 so you're looking at this lot as well! The other 10 photos are showing Coal Mine Canyon Road, one of the roads that leads east over this hill, and a cowgirl and the store about 4.5 miles south at Interstate 80. I loved the cowgirl in pink and it reminded me that yep this is cowgirl country too - not just cowboy country! Hot Dog!

The property is about 4.5 miles N of Interstate 80 off the Ryndon exit in a rural valley. Coal Mine Canyon Rd, a graveled/oiled county maintained road leads sits 6/10 of a mile west as seen in images 31 & 32. I also included in image #33 one of the roads that heads east over the hills so you can get an idea of what they are like. You would need to improve the road and we had to engage the 4 wheel drive to get up to the top of the hill as the roads have only been bladed years ago.

But once we were up there Oh My Gosh what fabulous views of the Elko Hills & Ruby Mountains! They loom large across the valley to the S and SE and then even more peaks of the Rubies rising to the E as well! The Rubies are so big they tower over the Elko Hills! Called the Swiss Alps of Nevada her snow-capped peaks offer beautiful views to this subdivision!

The property was a gentle rolling hills with lots of tall sagebrush, scattered grass, it was a nice lot! My notes say come bring your family and get away! I noticed a neighbor not too far to the south that has a cute little getaway place with a toy hauler/RV and some quads. It looks like they go out here to play and have fun.

There is power down the road a few miles towards the interstate. There is also power on the other side of the mountains to the east as there are homes down there but still quite a ways distance. You would need to contact the local power company to know the cost to bring it. At this time alternative sources like solar would want to be considered.

The Adobes are located N and NW of Elko and runs for about 80 miles and has an area of about 314 square miles. It’s highest summit is 8,134 feet. It's on the list of Nevada’s 172 Prominent Peaks! I found a posting on summitpost.org of someone that hiked to the peak. They shared how to get out to the trail and the way up to the peak. They also shared several fabulous photos overlooking across the valley and Humboldt River to the Ruby Mountains. It seems that this is becoming quite known to climbers as you will see in the photos! Cool! She is definitely an unsung hero compared to the Rubies but she also has lots of character in her and I remember thinking how unique some of her cool peaks are when I first started taking photos of her about fifteen years ago.

And then there are fabulous views of long range of the Ruby Mountains from the east to the south before they get hidden behind the Elko Hills! They sure had a lot of snow in her peaks still and I’ve heard it’s been a wet spring there! Called the Swiss Alps of Nevada she reaches up to 11,317 feet at Ruby Dome! Oh what a pretty place to watch it snow on the Rubies!

On the west side of Coal Mine Canyon a short ways across the valley are the Adobes, located N and NW of Elko. They run for about 80 miles and has an area of about 314 square miles.

Most of the Adobes are a checkerboard of public (Bureau of Land Management) and private ownership. This pattern is attributed to the Pacific Railway Act of 1862, where the federal government gave railroad companies free land in alternating sections as an incentive and a means to finance the overwhelming task of linking east with west by rail.

Several square miles of BLM land are close by as seen in the BLM and parcel map! (BLM land is in orange). A section = 1 square mile = 640 acres. For more information on BLM land visit www.blm.gov.

Elko County contains the majority of Nevada’s mule deer and this range is home to one of the largest mule deer and antelope herds in the state. They migrate between their summer range in the Snake and Adobe ranges to winter range in the Pequop Mountains. The N Fork of the Humboldt River borders the Adobe range to the south and east.

One of the largest herds I’ve seen in my life in 2004 while exploring this area!

Devils Gate is the big ranch about 11 miles north and well worth the drive! When I went by the ranch in December 2014 I spotted a huge herd of mule deer out grazing in their hay field! It gives you an idea what the landscaped mountains look like in the winter time snow.

My kind farm trucks!

Within an hour’s drive of the property are some famous fishing holes, Wildhorse Reservoir, Ruby Lake, and South Fork Reservoir!

Wildhorse Reservoir is a 2,800 acre premium trout reservoir 60 miles north of the town of Elko. In 2011 I ran into some men who had just hauled a 350 pound elk from the Wild Horse State Recreation Area and of course I have included photos of those as well! Hunters know the area for its elk, deer, mountain lion and bird but it's the fishermen that tell tall stories about ice fishing at Wildhorse.

Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge sits on the SE side of the Ruby Mountains. With over 12,000 acres this area is a special habitat to over 207 species of birds providing feeding, nesting and a resting stop in the Pacific Flyway. On one of my first visits to Elko County some nice gentlemen told me that Ruby Lake was the best fishing in the state!

South Fork Reservoir and State Rec area is about 20 minutes S of Elko. It covers 1,650 acres and is surrounded by 2,200 acres of wildlife-filled meadow land and rolling hills and known for its trophy-class trout and bass.

The zoning allows for a home, manufactured home or year round RV use! I have really seen the areas along Interstate 80 continuing to grow and it seems it’s mostly the locals who buy properties out here to build a home in the country side. Yet you’re still within a reasonable drive to the bustling town of Elko for a garlic steak sandwich at the Star Hotel in downtown Elko!

I own a piece of land at the top of the hill that sits on the west overlooking this valley and keep telling myself someday I am going to build myself a little place there and watch it snow on the Ruby Mountains! This would be a great spot for a cowgirl to go explore! Enjoy! Char the Explorer : )

Elko County Area Photos

A video of my journeys thru Meadow Valley Ranchos Unit 11, the Hamilton-Bullion Trail and the South Fork State Reservoir where I sat thru a cattle drive in Elko, Nevada!

The Hamilton-Bullion Trail is an 11 mile loop ]for horses, hikers and mountain bikers. It goes from Elko onto BLM land and over hills offering scenic views of the Ruby Mountains, South Fork Reservoir and the Humboldt River.

South Fork covers 1,650 acres and is surrounded by 2,200 acres of wildlife-filled meadow land and rolling hills. Known for its trophy-class trout and bass, and bird watching.

Elko County is located in northeastern Nevada, 295 miles east of Reno and 237 miles west of Salt Lake City. With 17,135 square miles it is one of the largest counties in the USA and is the heart of NE Nevada. A book listing American towns with the highest quality of life declared Elko, Nevada, "The Best Small Town in America." It is a small city, and a booming trading and service center for a mining and ranching area roughly the size of New England. In 2005 Relocate-America.com has named Elko City as 1 of the "Top 100 Places To Live" in the United States.

The population of Elko County is over 52,000, the town of Elko is over 18,000 and the town of Spring Creek is 12,000. Lately, Elko has evolved into a showcase for Western American Folk Art. Long famous for the National Basque Festival, held each Independence Day, a new era in Elko's cultural history began in 1985, when the first Cowboy Poetry Gathering was held. Estimates are 8000 - 10000 people attended the festival this January!

The weather in Elko County is considered ideal by many. Summer finds hot, dry afternoons with temperatures in the 90s, cooling to the low 40s and 50s by morning. Winters are moderate with lows typically in the 20s or 30s. Daytime highs during the winter months are in the 40s or 50s. Snowfall averages 42 inches per year and generally melts quickly. Yearly rainfall ranges from 9 to 10.5 inches. Sunny skies are usually seen over 300 days a year!

The land is mountainous and interspersed with low, flat valleys. The Humboldt River flows through the county, with the Ruby Mountains stretching across it in a north-south direction. The elevation in the valleys is about 5000 and reaches up to 11,300 feet at Ruby Dome. The elevation of Pilot Peak on the east side of Elko County reaches up to 10,716 feet. Elko County provides unlimited recreational opportunities with fishing, big game hunting (mule deer, elk, antelope and bighorn sheep), snowmobiling, ice fishing, mountain biking, hiking, camping, boating and skiing.
